Avoiding Creative Blocks
Avoiding Creative Blocks
During music production or perhaps during any creative process many creators face creative blocks. They can be daunting and damaging, as any professional needs inspiration and muse while crafting a perfect sound, making a new beat, recording vocals or tweaking around with pre-made samples. In this article we would like to talk about 3 main creative blocks and ways to avoid them.
1) The Mental Barrier - this is when you are trapped in a singular way of thinking.
Let's say you are working on a brand new cinematic fx pack for your next movie. But you are so locked in to what you are doing that you forget about other options and other possibilities - which are indeed endless. You create a sound which is linear and just does not feel right, but you are stuck in a loop of not being able to have a breakthrough. A solution to this is simple: go outside, change your mindset by talking to other people and asking about their feedback. Make sure to reach out to these who will tend to disagree. Meditate, find inner peace and try again.
2) The Emotional Barrier - being scared about going places you have not been before or creating something that you are not familiar with.
Creativity is intense. It's uncomfortable. And largely due to the fact that you are faced with the unknown. For example, if you are working on a new music genre. If you have always played the piano, but now you are trying to play the guitar. If you have always composed techno, but recently turnt to creating hip-hop. If you always used pre-made samples, but now you are trying to compose. These type of shifts can always lead to inner resistance and procrastination - simply because of the fear factor. Emotions such as fear and pain will fill your creative space leaving you with nothing but an emotional barrier. The solution to this is routine and commitment. It is to face and to funnel these emotions up to a point where you are driven by them. And once you get over the initial shock of change, you will be surprised at what you can achieve.
3) The Physical Barrier - not having enough knowledge, the necessary equipment and the creative space.
As a matter of fact, you can be perfectly ready to create. You overcame your mental and emotional barriers, but reached a point where you lack the necessary tools. Maybe you want a new synth. Or a software. Maybe you are looking for premium sound packs, but all you can afford are free sample presets and loops. Maybe you need a music studio, but it costs a fortune. We offer you 2 solutions to this barrier - you either save the resources, money and the time you need to purchase what you want or you achieve as much as you can with the constraints that you have. Get creative, think outside of the box, because you can always turn your computer into a musical instrument and turn your room into a music studio at the lowest cost.
